Neighbourhood Initiative for Women Advancement (NIWA) is a non-governmental, not-for-profit.
NIWA is an initiative towards women and young peoples’ empowerment and emancipation. It was established in 1996 as an effort towards addressing the socio-economic and political problems, harmful cultural and traditional practices against women, the girl-child and young people, poverty and disease in our community.
NIWA is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Part C of the Company and Allied Matters Act as a charitable organization limited by guarantee CAC\ IT\NO 38152.
STRUCTURE:
NIWA has an operational office in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state but with a mandate to implement its programmes in Nigeria.
NIWA has a four member Board of Trustees of 2 women and 2 men; an Advisory Council of 6, 3 women and 3 men and a Management Committee headed by the Executive Director who is also a member of the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees meets once a year to review performance of the organization, deal with issues of funding and approve programmes and budgets of the organization.
The Advisory Council meets once a year to assist in programmes’ review and design. The members are available all year round for consultation. Members offer their services free of charge.
The Management Committee is comprised of top management staff of the organization headed by the Executive Director. The Committee meets weekly to review programmes of the various Departments, formulate and\or design programmes and adopt budgets.
NIWA operates through 4 departments; Administration, Accounts\Finance, Resource Documentation and Library services, programmes. A Management Committee member heads each department.

To promote a society that ensures equal opportunities for all persons.
OBJECTIVES:
- To assist women and young people to recognize and understand their basic human rights and challenge all social, cultural\traditional practices that dehumanize them.
- To encourage girl-child education and increase the level of participation of women and young people in decision-making and governance.
- To promote women and young peoples’ health, reproductive rights and economic advancement.
- To position women and young people strategically to ensure sustainable environment.
